the Gift of Giving

Happy Birthday 2018 and Best Wishes on all the greetings, birthdays and other gift giving opportunities you will encounter this year!
We all contemplate going the extra mile for our friends, family and acquaintances for birthdays. But nowadays, thanks to Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media outlets, birthday greetings and other special times are often reduced to the mere posting of a GIF or MEME on someone’s timeline. But guess what? You didn’t miss their occasion, and that’s important! Yay!! However, while general expressions are appreciated by most, there are other ways to recognize those in your circle at gift giving time.

Tip #1:

When it comes to celebrating those closest to us, a personal and thoughtful approach is best. It lets your loved ones know that you care. Emily Post suggests that a call at midnight might be appropriate for birthday shout-outs. That might be a stretch for some, but it can be a truly caring gesture for your special someone.

Tip #2:

Giving a gift isn’t always necessary to celebrate our loved ones. Consider a person’s “love language” and give the “gift” that is meaningful to that recipient. In many instances, your gift of time or sharing an experience like a bike ride or walk in the park can be a truly memorable and beautiful gift.

Tip #3:

Be respectful of your budget. We all know someone to whom an actual present really matters. And so, by all means, do present one to them – graciously, of course. But, you don’t need to break the bank to do so. A beautiful candle, a T-shirt with a creative, personal message, a lovely book could do the trick. In sum, an expensive gift is not always necessary.

Tip #4:

If you give a gift, don’t expect one in return. Your language should never be “Well, I gave her a $2000 gift so I’d better get…” A refined and empowered woman would never reduce herself to the material things she receives. You should never think that one expensive gift deserves one in return. Be graceful in your actions, words and thoughts.

Tip #5:

Group/workplace gifts can be tricky for those on a budget. In this case, why not select a personal card expressing your well wishes. In addition, cards presented from the office should be signed as “From the office” to not single out non-participants. However, if the recipient thanks you for the office gift, simply extend your best wishes and be honest that you could not participate.

Tip#6:

Finally, as the holidays are now behind us, there will be plenty of occasions to make someone’s day by giving for weddings, housewarmings, Mother’s Day and Father’s day just to name a few. And when you do, always acknowledge the recipient’s unique personality, respect them and give cheerfully!
