let’s get organized!

As we approach Fall, I get excited because personally, it’s one of my favorite seasons of the year! This is the time most of us realize change has to occur. First with our wardrobe. It’s the season to begin to weed out our closets. Time to store those summer clothes and unpack and re-organize those fall collections. We have to make room for those new sweater and boot trends.

This is the time to get organized!

Closet makeovers and home organization projects increase during this time of year. My clients begin preparing for the holidays, therefore they want their closet spaces to be organized. While we may not be able to design a custom closet , we can duplicate the design principle.

Let’s examine this beautifully designed custom closet.

Starting with the natural Bamboo Wood Flooring, which makes the white custom cabinetry pop. The mirrored doors, recess lighting, chandelier and marble countertop glamorize the space, as well as, add a level of luxury. The crown molding at the top of the cabinetry isn’t flush to the ceiling which gives the illusion of a higher ceiling, elongating and enlarging the space. The island dresser is a luxury storage addition. This beautiful closet is luxurious at best but above all it exudes organization and functionality. Custom closet designs of this nature begin around $25k. Here I show you how you can achieve the same organization, functionality and glamour in your closets for considerably less.

Design Tip #1 – Get inspired and get a vision. Visit higher end showrooms, California Closets for example. Then check out the Container Store for practical ideas. Use your camera phone to capture ideas, style, and direction. Map out a plan of action. The goal is to organize! Tackle the project in phases.

Design Tip #2 – When working with a smaller closet, divide your closet into three, if at all possible. Jackets, blazers, and tops. Color coded bottoms below. The middle is custom cabinetry can be great storage for all miscellaneous tees, camisoles, accessories and jewelry. You want your closet to reflect your personality, functional and aesthetically appeasing.

Design Tip #3 – Consider compartmentalizing your closet into categories. Design it with this in mind. From left to right, formal wear color coded, Semi formal, and casual. I prefer color coding from light to dark (left to right). Make sure your shoes are coordinated and categorized the same way. Being organized saves you time and you’ll be prepared for any and every occasion. Design your closet with vanity cabinets you can purchase from your favorite home improvement store. Incorporating tall vintage bookshelves, or exotic furniture finds from an amazing adventure will work great for decorative storage baskets and boxes. Be creative! The end goal of closet organization is efficiency and easy access.
