Have you ever been caught off guard after hosting a dinner party? Dinner turned into an unexpected overnight guest! Take it from me and let me save you the embarrassment of being unprepared because you do NOT want to resort to taking a comforter off your bed to make a pallet on the floor in the corner of the living room for your guest! ABSOLUTELY NOT!! A definite disaster. It would be a shame to have a fabulous dinner party replaced with memories of dread!
I want to share with you what I’ve learned from that dreadful dilemma; how to prepare for that unexpected guest and the MUST-HAVES for them. First things first – Have a furnished guest room. I thought about what makes my hotel stays memorable and comfortable and I applied those principles to my guest room. (Insider Tip: Wait for your favorite White Sale).
When you purchase bedding for your guest room, find comfortable linen and be sure to include an additional sheet set, blanket, comforter, duvet covers, and pillows. You’ll only have to do it once unless you’re expecting multiple guests at any given time. Be sure to snag/grab some towels for the bathroom. Buy two sets of bath, hand and face towels. (Insider Tip: keep them white so you’ll always know they are for the guests).
You can make your guests will feel at home by providing travel-size toiletries such as shampoo, body wash, lotion, deodorant, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. Place them in a decorative storage box labeled “For Guests Only”. You can also consider a travel size makeup mirror, comb, and brush, nightstand organizer to function as a charging station, change holder, keys, and jewelry and writing pens.
If you really want to impress your guests or make them feel extremely special, have a robe and slippers in the closet! Also, consider giving them a gift to take with them. Journals are thoughtful, inexpensive and will make the best impression. Whomever you let in your home should feel like your friend or family!
*If you don’t have a guest room, invest in a convertible sofa, futon or sleeper sofa. These items with your extra bedding will create a comfortable oasis without walls.
